Our skin is the largest organ of the body and works in amazing ways to restore and repair itself. When you invest in your skin, your skin will invest in you. So being able to have a better understanding of the importance of skincare will promote longer lasting skin health.
To break it all down the skin can be thought of as a house which contains the three F's - FEED, FORTIFY and FINISH.
FEED: If the deeper base layers of our skin are unable to FEED the other layers by storing nutrients and energy needed to keep our skin young, then that will show in our outer layers of our skin.
FORTIFY: If our upper middle layers are not protected by our top layer or fed by our bottom layer then this area of our skin will not be protected and things such as sun damage will show on our surface skin.
FINISH: If the top layer of our skin is not protecting the lower layers - much like a roof protecting a house - then the skins defence system simply breaks down and damage is caused to our deeper layers of skin.
This base layer of our skin is known as the Dermis. This is where nutrients and energy are stored by what we feed the skin via food, vitamins and minerals.
The Dermis is where cell formations known as Fibroblasts live and they are responsible for collagen and elastin production to assist with the anti ageing process.
This middle layer of our skin is known as the Epidermis. This area is responsible for anything on the surface of our skin such as pigmentation, wrinkles, thread veins and dehydration.
Based on how well the higher and lower layers of the skin work to protect the Epidermis, this will determine if this layer has all it needs to do its job.
This top layer of our skin is known as the Stratum Corneum. This part of the skin acts as a barrier defence system to protect against and prevent anti oxidants such as sun damage and pollution reaching the skin.
If the top section of our skin is not protected then the skins defence system simply breaks down.
